I tried to do the sensible thinkg and find the post on ubuntu but no luck. So, would someone please post the info again about running it from cd with speech? Thanks.

If you've got the cd just boot from it, remembering that you might have to change your boot sequence in the bios.
Once you here a quite long startup sound, give it a couple seconds to be safe, press alt f2 and then after a few seconds type orca.
Orca will now start, and it'll ask you some questions about what you want to enable or not.
Once its done that, it will tell you to log out, you do this by pressing ctrl alt and backspace.
Then you'll here a little drum sound, press enter and then it'll log you back in and orca should start.
If not, just type it in run again, and it should start with out asking you questions.
Note that quite a few people have tryed this and i dunno anyone that has got it to work except for me, i'm probly just rubbish at giving instructions or perhaps its just linux for you.
I haven't tested the new version 7.10 yet, although i think its still got orca in it.
BEN.

Ben, I didn't see 7.0 just 6.1 I think. is there any way of knowing weather orca is included? also, can you tell me what alt-f2 is actually doing and you also say if it doesn't start type it in run again. exactly waht do you meean? how do I get to run or can you give me the sintax for the run line? and, I burned the iso file to cd. is an iso file bootable or should I have used a burning utillity that makes a bootable cd? I use the standard xp utillity pasted the iso file to the cd folder and then burned it with the wizzard. Thanks.

Here's the easier way to get it up and running...
1: Boot from the disc. It will spin for a few seconds.
2: When it stops spinning, press f5. This brings up the accessibility menu. There is no speech at this point.
3: press 3, and hit enter twice.
4: The system will boot with Orca speaking to you.

Also, Firefox is less than satisfactory in the OS for accessibility! It needs some serious scripting.

Good morning Jesse. Would you say this is the easiest distribution to get up an running or are there easier ones? Yea! I teach computers butdefinately don't know anythinkg about linux. I'll give this a try. So, when is leopard coming out?

Leopard? I guess we'll find out next week, now won't we?

I don't know much about Linux either...Just followed the instructions on the Orca site, and it worked fine for me. I have a crash system that I don't do anything with, so I installed on it, and it seems to work just fine.

I'd say that Ubuntu is currently the best distribution if you want to access the gnome GUI. GRML (www.grml.org) is probably the easiest text-centric live CD distribution.

WOW, I am sighted and am quite amazed as to how many people in the blind community use UBUNTU. I am a Ubuntu user as well.

Next question is how many of you use BLINUX? What are the diffrences if any.

I wonder how I would get an extra network driver on the live CD? Nothing seems to get online with my Marvell Miniport integrated ethernet, Ubuntu, GRML, etc. My old machine has a Soundblaster Value that does not speak with Orca. I would buy VmWare or something, but installing into a virtual machine really sounds tough.

I am going to also start using Ubuntu and Linux pretty soon. Sounds cool. I heard that Linux is much more secure then Windows. So if Microsoft goes down the drain with Vista in the next 10 years, I will be using Linux if anything should happen.
But Vista is ... Bleh!

I can't seem to get orca to speak. I burned the ubuntu image to a cd, rebooted the computer, and then started it up again. I have tried several things. when the cd started to spin, I waited for it to stop, pressed f5, 3, and enter twice. then the cd started to spin again. after that nothing happend
another thing I tried is booting up from the cd, and pressing enter without f5 to let it boot up. then I heard the startup sound. after that I pressed alt f2, and typed in orca. there was no speech. is there anything else I should do?
thanks

Wow, the latest stable version finally goes on the network. I had the same problem of not getting speech on the live CD. After I had dad over to install it, I rebooted, and Orca came right up after login. I don't care much for the speech that it comes with. I wish I knew where people that are demonstrating it are getting Viavoice. I'm sure it's around at Wizard Software, if I knew enough people who would buy it as you have to buy in bulk.
